Subscription box services have boomed in popularity in recent years, and a trade association has formed to represent the growing industry.
The Subscription Trade Association will help members "with networking, professional development and customer service benchmarking for an industry that has had more than 2,500 subscription box companies started in the last three years," according to a statement announcing the group's creation.
Under a subscription box service, customers are periodically mailed an assortment of items for a monthly or yearly fee. One of the most popular services is Birchbox, which provides cosmetic and skincare products. There are hundreds—if not thousands—of other services, providing food to clothes to entertainment products. Even President Donald Trump has participated, launching the "Big League Box" service to raise funds for his reelection campaign.
"Over the next decade, the subscription box industry is on track to generate more than $90 billion in annual revenues," said Paul Chambers, one of the co-founders of SUBTA. "We believe forming SUBTA is a natural next step given the growth that is ongoing in subscription commerce as a whole, and creating a global network that helps grow enduringly fantastic subscription businesses just makes sense."
Chambers and the other founders of the association all come from the industry. SUBTA kicked off with the launch of an industry trade show, the Subscription Summit, held this week in Austin.
SUBTA's founders did not say whether the association would be nonprofit. subta.com
